Harry Potter Gryffindor outfit

By Olga Davydova

Posted 23 July, 2007 in Trends

Riding the wave of the latest Harry Potter craze, Pink Rock Candy has put together a wonderful and very affordable Gryffindor inspired outfit. Now hardcore fans have a stylish alternative to those distasteful robes they used to wear to movie theaters and bookstores torturing poor muggles’ eyes.

Decide what’s tackier

By Olga Davydova

Posted 23 July, 2007 in Cute Beat, Polls

Gigglesugar offers you to decide what’s tackier: Judith Leiber Poodle Bag that Fashionably Cute has discovered or a random poodle bag with feathers found at an online shop. At the moment (while I’m writing this post), Judith Leiber is the uncontested leader ;)

By Olga Davydova

On Friday I put together my own version of men’s seven deadly fashion sins, but which is the most capital vice that would subject a poor tasteless man to eternal damnation? Please make your choice in the poll below and post your opinion in the comments.

More men’s worst fashion sins

By Olga Davydova

Posted 20 July, 2007 in Ugly

Forbes has put together a list of men’s worst fashion sins:

  1. Pants are too long or too short.
  2. White socks with dress shoes.
  3. Mixing patterns.
  4. Ties too long or too short.
  5. Stained clothes, wearing your breakfast, lunch or dinner on your shirt is unbecoming.
  6. Waists that sit too high or too low.
  7. Scruffy shoes.
  8. Wearing all your handheld devices on your belt, don’t make your belt look like something out of Batman.
  9. Over-layering.
  10. Mismatched belts and shoes.

Fashionably cute has got something to add to this list:

  1. Wearing camouflage. Military trends are always ugly. Leave camouflage to the armed forces.
  2. Feminine colors. Seriously, don’t wear hot pink items guys, please!
  3. Hello Kitty themed items for men. While Fashionably Cute absolutely adores Hello Kitty as the ultimate icon of cuteness, it’s not for guys. So throw those cute cufflinks away
  4. Fur and faux fur coats. You don’t want to look like an old lady, do you?
  5. Jeans that are too tight. I mean not just any skinny jeans (they can be stylish), but those that squeeze the life out of you. Unless you are McGyver.
  6. T-shirts with stupid sayings. Don’t think that you can impress the ladies by wearing a ‘cool’ t-shirt.
  7. Fancy facial hair. Normal facial hair is perfectly fine, but don’t wear weird beards or moustaches, like the one James Hetfield of Metallica is wearing. Or you’ll end up in our Wacky Fashion section.

What do you think? Please join the discussion and post your opinion in the comments.

Christian Louboutin makes a hairy handbag

By Olga Davydova

Posted 19 July, 2007 in Loony Accessories

Christian Louboutin is best known for making gorgeous shoes. As for handbags… this wild and hairy example scares me. When I look at it I have a feeling it’s going to jump up and run away into the woods. I just hope it doesn’t bite. If you’re not terrified, then this Ewok handbag is available for adoption at Saks for a fee of $1695.

Whimsical earbuds with cute smilies for your iPod

By Olga Davydova

Posted 19 July, 2007 in Discoveries

These little iPod earphone charms are more stylish than you think. They are a perfect way accentuate the cute earrings you wear (and I’m pretty sure that if you wear any earrings at all, they must be cute and stylish). Also, it’s a nice way to spice up your iPod.

Ratatouille review with photos and art

By Olga Davydova

Posted 18 July, 2007 in Food Beat

If you haven’t seen Disney and Pixar’s new film Ratatouille, go and do it NOW! It’s an amazing piece of animation. The story is beautiful, touching and funny, the characters are cute.

Technically it’s absolutely perfect, the animation is brilliant, the attention to every little detail is awesome, the believability is stunning, the food is delicious. In all other 3D animated films food looked like rubber or plastic, here it looks like real food.

Now, why am I so excited about this movie? Why do all the critics almost unanimously give it the highest ratings? Why does it get raving reviews everywhere?

Ratatouille is an unbelievable breakthrough!!! It’s the first 3D animated film where the production crew managed to fully implement 2D animation principles. This movie is going to have the biggest impact on the animation industry since Toy Story.

Pixar’s Toy Story was the first 3D animated feature length movie in the world. When it came out in 1995 it changed the animation industry forever. Hand-drawn 2D animation became outdated, everyone wanted to see movies made with the new technology, so Shrek by Dreamworks came out and received the first Oscar in the new nomination “Best Animated Feature” set up by the Academy to support the emerging animation boom.

Pixar, Dreamworks along with Blue Sky and other smaller studios have made dozens of movies in the recent decade. However something was gone from the animation. It lacked the warmth, the life of Disney classics like Snow White, Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland and others. 3D movies looked more like stop motion puppet animation, which had never been as appealing as hand-drawn 2D animation.

You see, hand-drawn classical animation, developed by Disney Studios, that has been captivating audiences for decades, is governed by several principles, which breathe life into characters, but these principles could not be fully recreated in 3D. It was too difficult, too costly, too time consuming.

Pixar has always been setting industry standards, so they managed to develop their own in-house software and, teaming up with director Brad Bird, made the Incredibles in 2004, a great movie where you could see the first inklings of the return to the “old school” animation. However, only with Ratatouille have the animators, again under the guidance of by Brad Bird, managed to fully merge 2D and 3D together and brought back that warm and cozy feeling of Disney animation that we know and love. Together with the wonderful screenplay, art direction, score and many other details it makes an absolute masterpiece.

Suffice to say that according to Cartoonbrew, Victor Haboush, Disney’s art director and artist, who worked on Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians, said about Ratatouille that “It’s the best animated film since Pinocchio.” For your information, Pinocchio came out in 1940.

I don’t know anything for sure, but I’ve heard rumors that Ratatouille may get an Oscar not only for the best animated feature, but for the best movie of the year, as Disney’s Snow White had done in 1937, and Snow White was the first full length animated movie in the world.

Thanks to Disney publicity manager Igor Potapov for the photos.

Hermes can be cute!

By Olga Davydova

Posted 18 July, 2007 in Celebrity Style

Last week I said that classic Hermes Birkin can’t be cute. I was wrong! When Hermes comes in the sweetest color, pink, it is cute! As proved by Victoria Beckham.

While I don’t like the way she matches pink with an even hotter shade of pink (we need something more calm and contrasting with this shade of pink there, like white or black), you can’t deny that she has a collection of handbags to die for!

Ash&Diamonds, a popular Japanese fashion line

By Olga Davydova

Posted 17 July, 2007 in Kawaii, Discoveries

Ash&Diamonds is an ultra popular Japanese line of clothes and accessories. Their items are featured in every fashion magazine in Japan.

They are mostly famous for the uber cute and glittery accessories in vibrant colors and prints: wallets in different sizes and shapes, key cases, make up pouches, address books, name card cases, etc. Check out their fabulous Dolce line in sparkling gold, silver and hot pink stripes. Absolutely fabulous!

Ash&Diamonds goods are not yet available for sale in the US, but good news is that unlike many Japanese fashion items, they can be bought online from Ash&Diamonds’ official store at the Japanese shopping portal Rakuten, the store offers international shipping with EMS express mail. Bad news is the store’s mostly in Japanese, the prices are in yen and many cute things are marked as ’sold out’.

While the names of the products and lines are in English, and yen to dollar conversion is not so difficult to figure out (with services like Yahoo! Currency Converter), the checkout area is in Japanese.
