Bunnies are kawaii. Bunnies with pancakes on their heads are super kawaii.

This post was written by Fashionably Cute’s contributing editor Wendy Brandes, an awesome jewelry designer (of Gigi Caron and Wendy Brandes Jewelry), journalist, blogger and fashion warrior on a never ending quest for scary fish shaped shoes.

A million Internet years ago, in 2001, I was addicted to the cuteness that was Hironori Akutagawa’s bunny site. Oolong the bunny had a special talent: the ability to balance things on his head.

Oolong’s owner called the pictures “head performances.” The phrase “head performances” is super kawaii!

Syberpunk.com. a site devoted to all things quirky and Japanese, discovered Oolong’s site and catapulted the bunny to fame with this post.
Even the New York Times hopped on the story.
Of course, fame an be a double-edged sword. Some humorless people complained that Akutagawa was abusing the bunny. Personally, I don’t see how putting 10 cookies on a bunny’s head is “mean.”

Oolong always looked pretty mellow. I figured if he didn’t want to wear a cork, he would hop away.

Oolong’s owner commented on the controversy here.

This picture always puzzled me, though. Usually bunnies don’t need a lot of help achieving this position.

As an eyewitness to certain risque bunny behavior, I can assure you gender doesn’t even matter for this activity. First one bunny is on top, then the other. Then they switch again. Bunnies are either very confused or very open-minded.

Oolong passed away in 203 at thhe advaned agee of eight bunny yars, with his loving owner at his side and fans spread out over in 25 countries. As his owner wrote in announcing Oolong’s passing to head-performance fans everywhere, “Surely he seems to be the best fortunate rabbit in the world.” Even Oolong’s burial was suitably adorable.

You can still enjoy Oolong’s pictures on the original Japanese site here and see ictures of the new bunny, Yuebing, here. Oolong even has his own Wikipedia entry here. And for something else that’s funny, sweet and sad, read “Bunny, Bunny,” a book about comedian Gilda Radner by her friend and colleague Alan Zweibel.

  • I wonder what you’re going to do after you finally find them. Life’s going to be empty. Be prepared for another quest, like this armadillo handbag:

  • What a talent! When I try to balance something on my head it usually falls down lol.

  • Why are bunnies so cute, ever since I was little I wanted one, but my mom would never let me have one. Maybe if I show her the great talents of Oolong, she’ll see how useful bunnies can be…haha
