Retro hairstyles

By Olga Davydova

Posted 24 March, 2008 in Beauty

Here are some resources for the cute 40s and 50s hairstyles, recommended by the Retro Housewife column. This should be one of the first steps to take if you want to turn yourself into a true bombshell ;)

Fifties Hairstyles by The Fifties Web. Some examples and a few bits of advice with basic how-to pictures.

Vintage By Buttons Hair Port. Retro hairdos with comprehensive and clear step by step instructions, photos and tutorial drawings. Very useful!

Very good instructions from vintage hair salon books shared by L.A. Nocturne. Again, clear step by step instructions, photos and schematic drawings. The webpage also features a lot of information on tools needed for the vintage styling and provides how-tos for retro hairstyle elements like pincurls, fingerwaves, etc.

Kawaii My Melody embellished nail oil bottle

By Olga Davydova

Posted 5 September, 2007 in Kawaii, Beauty

It had never occurred to me that a simple bottle of nail oil could be turned into a work of art, until I saw a photo of this creatively embellished bottle at aminail, a Japanese blog about nail design.

The detailed decorations on the bottle, featuring Sanrio’s cute bunny character My Melody, are made of crystals and acrylic sculpture powder, the same as used in 3D nail design in manicure salons all over the world.

There’s a whole trend in Japan for embellishing everyday items, such as pens, hair clips, plastic jewelry and even cell phones with acrylic nail products.

Please watch this space  for more info and even instructions, as I’ll try to gather some tips and knowledge from Japanese nail art books and magazines to share with you. However, keep in mind that nail products can severely damage plastic.

Kawaii Bambi Manicure Tutorial in a Japanese Nail Design Magazine

By Olga Davydova

Posted 16 August, 2007 in Kawaii, Discoveries, Beauty

I’ve seen lots of cute nail art tutorials in Japanese nail design magazines, but this kawaii step by step Bambi manicure tutorial in Nail Max magazine absolutely took my breath away (I’m sorry for the bad picture quality though, I couldn’t find bigger images).

No knowledge of Japanese necessary. All the steps are shown in pictures (only a small portion of the pictures is posted above), the supplies shouldn’t be too difficult to find in your local nail art salons or stores.

Find the tutorial in Nail Max Magazine, August 2007 issue, sold on Ebay.

Cute Animal Shaped Soaps

By Olga Davydova

Posted 14 August, 2007 in Beauty

Last week I wrote about glycerine soap shaped like a plastic bag filled with water and with a plastic pet fish floating inside.

Now you can decorate your bathroom with a whole line of of adorable carved vegetable based soaps shaped like little animals: Maltese, Dachshund, Three Little Pigs, Magic Frog, Duckies, Chihuahua, Three Monkeys (Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil).

The attention to detail is amazing, some of the animals even have colored eyes and tiny pink bows in their hair or around their neck. They are scented with fresh linen, cottage linen, lychee, water lilly, tuberose, mimosa, lavender and violet.

All soaps come in gift boxes or in super stylish packaging that matches their colors, with a soft terry wash sponge and topped with a bow. Buy them at Jest Jewels.

Crystal Studded Shaving Brush

By Olga Davydova

Posted 13 August, 2007 in Beauty

Who could have thought that such a trivial beauty accessory as shaving brush could be so cute? Whish Crystal Body Brush is, of course, an accessory for women. It is handmade and jeweled in Swarovski crystals. You can even choose the colors of crystals.

The price tag is absolutely not cute though: from $105 to $180 for one brush!

Pet fish soap

By Olga Davydova

Posted 8 August, 2007 in Beauty

Animal themed items are always cute. Spice up your bathroom with this awesome, crazy and colorful soap shaped like… a plastic bag filled with “water” and a pet fish floating inside.

The “fish” is made of vibrant colored plastic. The “plastic bag” and “water” are actually made of scentless clear vegetable based glycerine soap! Insanely adorable and fun.

Honey as a beauty product

By Olga Davydova

Posted 15 July, 2007 in Beauty

Honey is a great component for beauty products, it’s one of the best natural moisturizers, and it tastes awesome too.

Here are a few tips for homemade honey based beauty products (please make sure you’re not allergic before using these products and consult your doctor if you are not sure, because I’m not responsible for the outcome, these are just tips, not recommendations):

  • Honey moisturizing facial mask for dry skin: take 4 oz of honey, 2 egg yolks, 4 oz of vegetable oil, heat the ingredients a bit and blend them thoroughly, apply the mask, rinse off with warm water, reapply every 5 minutes and rinse off again.
  • Honey and eggs facial mask for oily skin: take two egg whites, 3/8 cup of honey, 1/2 teaspoon of almond oil, 2 tablespoons of oatmeal powder, mix everything, add oatmeal, apply the mask, hold for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off with warm and later cool water.

Here are some products with honey that you can buy:
