Can you handle the cute? The whole cute and nothing but the cute?

By Olga Davydova

Posted 27 November, 2007 in Discoveries

This post was written by Fashionably Cute’s contributing editor Wendy Brandes, an awesome jewelry designer (of Gigi Caron and Wendy Brandes Jewelry), journalist, blogger and fashion warrior on a never ending quest for scary fish shaped shoes.

Can you handle the cute? The whole cute and nothing but the cute?

These adorably chubby animals are available from SweetestPea on Etsy.

The fat penguin is so huggable.

The fat chick is so kissable.

The fat rice ball is so edible!

See the whole collection here. Thanks to “KT” for the link!

Also, this fat bag by Fendi is so cute! I must have it. Please buy it for me immediately.

Drooly Bib

By Olga Davydova

Posted 16 November, 2007 in Discoveries

I know, the idea of a baby bib shaped like drool sounds pretty gross, but just one look at the photo of the adorable bib above will make you drool over the cuteness.

The bib has been designed by Wry Baby, who are best known for making products that take the mickey out of poor defenseless babies (their motto is: “Raising Funny People”). Well, at least the cartoonish Drool Bib it’s better than their “I eat dirt” and “Someday I’ll have a hairy chest” baby outfits.

The Drooly Bib is, of course, waterproof!

How to start your own fashion line

By Olga Davydova

Posted 16 September, 2007 in Tools & Resources for Fashionistas, Discoveries

I’ve found an excellent website for all fashionistas aspiring to become the next Zac Posen: Dobizo is an amazing blog with plenty of information about starting your own fashion line.

The author is a young man named Fredrickus Williford who knows the industry very well, he studied fashion marketing and at 22 he already has his own successful t-shirt line Scout Union Apparel.

The information is presented in well structured articles, along with industry news and FAQ guides on all aspects of indie fashion business, from finding manufacturers to getting celebrities to wear the clothes you designed. My favorite post is Top 100 mistakes clothing lines make. All in all, it’s like Problogger for young designers. Definitely worth reading.

Cute Cat Food Mat

By Olga Davydova

Posted 3 September, 2007 in Discoveries

People like to have their food served on beautiful tablecloths. It seems cats do too.

I love what The Small Object Steno Pad’s Sarah has been doing, especially her amazing stamps and Little Small Clothespin People, but this cat food mat has to be one of her most creative projects:

Cats don’t really need a cat mat, at least my cats aren’t terribly messy. But still I felt the need to make a mat.

- she said about her creative process.

The mat is made of fabric stitched together to form a grid where Small Object signature stamps are strategically placed.

Skip Dessert T-Shirts

By Olga Davydova

Posted 22 August, 2007 in Discoveries, Food Fun

If you’re in the market for a hilariously cute t-shirt, then go to Threadless, their Skip Dessert T-Shirt is too cute to bear. Just look at that adorable dessert that is literally skipping with the help of two smiling vegetables. The cupcake’s facial expression as it does its exercise routine is priceless. Smiling food is the cutest thing ever, isn’t it?

Pretty strange to see this lady being so afraid of the cute little peaceful cupcake :)
The t-shirts are available through Threadless.

Kawaii Bambi Manicure Tutorial in a Japanese Nail Design Magazine

By Olga Davydova

Posted 16 August, 2007 in Kawaii, Discoveries, Beauty

I’ve seen lots of cute nail art tutorials in Japanese nail design magazines, but this kawaii step by step Bambi manicure tutorial in Nail Max magazine absolutely took my breath away (I’m sorry for the bad picture quality though, I couldn’t find bigger images).

No knowledge of Japanese necessary. All the steps are shown in pictures (only a small portion of the pictures is posted above), the supplies shouldn’t be too difficult to find in your local nail art salons or stores.

Find the tutorial in Nail Max Magazine, August 2007 issue, sold on Ebay.

Directory of Independent Fashion Designers and Retailers

By Olga Davydova

Posted 15 August, 2007 in Tools & Resources for Fashionistas, Discoveries

I’m always on the lookout for new cute brands and items to feature on Fashionably Cute. Many cute items are produced by rather obscure independent retailers, so searching the net for these shops is often difficult and time consuming.

Killer Cotton is a tool that proves to be very helpful in my quest. It’s the ultimate directory and search engine for independent hard to find retailers offering all kinds of products, including cute ones ;) It even provides ratings of the websites it lists, evaluting products, services and site usability and design.

The first few clicks on Killer Cotton have led me to these super cute discoveries:

“Coco” - Customizable Large Sunglasses Case available for $25 from Nitro*A*gogo

Lolibomb Vegan Whipped Lip Scrub that exfoliates, moisturizes, and primes dry lips for your lipstick and gloss. Made of organic products and sold for $14 at Lolibomb

Petite Leaf Straplet - made with cute Japanese fabric, colored cotton twill and denim, available for $22 from Littleoddforest

Angry Babyz: Japanese cute characters featuring baby animals throwing tantrums

By Olga Davydova

Posted 7 August, 2007 in Kawaii, Discoveries

I’m pretty sure most parents are unhappy if they kids are prone to throwing tantrums. However, Japanese people tend to see cuteness everywhere. Apparently they find even unpretty behavior cute.

Angry Babyz is a kawaii character line featuring rather cute baby animals with spectacularly furious facial expressions. The brand’s tagline is: “Mad Cool & Crazy”.

Of course, there is a whole bunch of merchandise with the characters available in Japan, like these extremely cute mugs. I really wish we could buy all the stuff here too.

Cute San-X Rilakkuma Chicks Evening Wallet

By Olga Davydova

Posted 1 August, 2007 in Kawaii, Discoveries

OMG! San-X is planning to release a limited edition long evening wallet featuring a tiny chick who is the best friend of the company’s leading character Rilakkuma bear. It’s available for preorder at their online shop, and will be shipped out to customers only in November.

The wallet is made of gold faux leather embossed with chick pattern and decorated with rhinestones. Apparently it also comes with a chick shaped piggy bank and a “good fortune” amulet for attracting money to your wallet. Pretty clever!

I really love this adorable wallet, which is a perfect example of Fashionably Cute’s Standard #1. It doesn’t look tacky, because the cuteness is not over the top here, and I’m even thinking about buying it (although it’s only sold in Japan, but it’s possible to purchase Japanese goods through a shopping deputy). It would go so well with my Aaron Basha duckling pendant!

The wallet doubles as a clutch and would accent an evening outfit perfectly. To avoid the dreaded cuteness overdose, I’d wear the clutch and the duckling pendant with a classic little black dress, a black cardigan and black shoes.

RebeccaBonbon, a cute French Bulldog character by Hello Kitty designer

By Olga Davydova

Posted 24 July, 2007 in Kawaii, Discoveries

RebeccaBonbon is a new cute Japanese character with high fashion flair. It’s an adorable, posh and pampered french bulldog created by the person who designed Hello Kitty for Sanrio in 1974, Yuko Shimizu. Rebecca has her own official website with lots of information in English, desktop goodies, videos (Rebecca TV) and lots of merchandise including jewelry, clothing, shoes and cell phone accessories.

Here is Rebecca’s bio from her official website:

Rebecca is a young French Bulldog. She was born in France. An American girl fell in love with her and brought her home to New York. Rebeccabonbon was born on November 11.
Now she lives in a spacious apartment with a room overlooking Central Park.
Of course, Rebecca takes her daily walks in the park wearing her best outfits.
She meets her many friends there and enjoys chatting with them. Rebecca loves flowers and ribbons, and accessories of all sorts. She has so many, too, for all of her weekend parties and picnics.
But what she loves most are candied bonbons. in fact, She loves bonbons so much that she came to be known and loved by all as Rebeccabonbon.

The official site names Rebecca a new fashion character superstar. Here’s a post with links to some of RebeccaBonbon merchandise.
