The best show of the week so far has to be Ralf Lauren. The designer celebrated his 40th anniversary in business with an incredible showcase of 72 styles. Some of them even remind me of Japanese Gothic Lolitas!

Fashionably Cute is going to cover the entire New York Fashion Week, ready to wear Spring-Summer 2008. Here are the cutest highlights of the first day.

Accentuated waists. Thank goodness the dreaded ugly “maternity” dresses are a thing of the past. It’s trendy to wear a belt where the waist is supposed to be.

It had never occurred to me that a simple bottle of nail oil could be turned into a work of art, until I saw a photo of this creatively embellished bottle at aminail, a Japanese blog about nail design.

The detailed decorations on the bottle, featuring Sanrio’s cute bunny character My Melody, are made of crystals and acrylic sculpture powder, the same as used in 3D nail design in manicure salons all over the world.

There’s a whole trend in Japan for embellishing everyday items, such as pens, hair clips, plastic jewelry and even cell phones with acrylic nail products.

Please watch this space  for more info and even instructions, as I’ll try to gather some tips and knowledge from Japanese nail art books and magazines to share with you. However, keep in mind that nail products can severely damage plastic.

People like to have their food served on beautiful tablecloths. It seems cats do too.

I love what The Small Object Steno Pad’s Sarah has been doing, especially her amazing stamps and Little Small Clothespin People, but this cat food mat has to be one of her most creative projects:

Cats don’t really need a cat mat, at least my cats aren’t terribly messy. But still I felt the need to make a mat.

The mat is made of fabric stitched together to form a grid where Small Object signature stamps are strategically placed.

I’m very excited to announce Fashionably Cute’s new project: a gallery of profiles of modern Japanese artists and illustrators. The gallery will feature artists from different genres: fashion illustrators, interior designers, textile and teddy bear artists, etc. They will have only one thing in common: their works are unbelievably cute!

These kawaii sushi are not only yummy but delicious even to look at. Great food decorating ideas from Japan!

I love cooking sushi, I even have my own secret recipes for California Rolls and Unagi Nigiri, and I’d love to make them more unique looking.

The top photo features the adorable San-X Monochrome Pigs characters called Monokuro Boo. According to the source of the photo the character “portraits” are made of cheese and nori.
