Hiromi Sato: Painting with Lace

By Olga Davydova

Posted 30 August, 2007 in Gallery of Artists, Cute Beat

The first artist featured in Fashionably Cute’s Gallery is Hiromi Sato, a fashion illustrator with a unique and delicate style. Hiromi literally paints with lace (view more pictures and info after the jump).

Her elaborate illustrations are collages that include pieces of lace, fabric, buttons, charms, glitter and, of course, paint and ink.

One of her most recent works is an illustration for the September issue of the Japanese bridal magazine “Zexy”.

Hiromi has got her own official website called white-eggs with plenty of info, a gallery of her unique illustrations and her diary, but the website is available in Japanese only.

She has put up a page on her site where she demonstrates her entire process of work step by step in pictures.

Hiromi’s agency is CWC, the Japanese company that currently holds the license to the famous Blythe dolls and represents the amazing illustrator Jeffrey Fulvimari (who worked with Madonna on her “English Roses” book).

Sato’s works are often exhibited at the CWC’s Gallery Lele, located in Daikanyama and CWC International’s Gallery Hanahou in New York.

She took part in “4 Femmes” and “Refresh your room, refresh your life” exhibitions. One of the latest Gallery Lele’s exhibitions where her works are featured is “Alice in Wonderland” held in March.

In July Hiromi did a series of drawings of the latest limited Blythe Doll Princess a la mode, with lace, eylet fabric, beads, charms and bows.

The drawings were exhibited at the Princess a la mode exhibition, where the Second Annual Blythe Beauty contest was held.

Christina of Team Sibley (one of the creators of Gentle River Blythe that won the First Blythe Beauty contest) visited the show and has posted several photos of Hiromi Sato’s illustrations created for that event.

Here is Hiromi Sato’s official biography from her agency’s website:

Hiromi was born in Hiroshima and is currently residing in Tokyo . She graduated from the Nippon Designer Gakuin in 1999, top of her class. In 2000, she began her career as an Illustrator and a designer at CWC . She is presently the Chief Art Director of the company and creates stunning and effective designs and illustrations targeting young women. Her illustration style is defined by its delicate lines and collage of various materials such as patterned cloth and wool. Hiromi is able to convey a wide range of subject matter such as nostalgic fashion illustrations to children’s books. Her unique, heart-warming work communicates through her warm color palette and illustrative expression.

Hiromi’s works are sometimes available for sale through Junie Moon art shop right after her exhibitions at the Gallery Lele.
